XGen is Autodesk Maya's powerful grooming and instancing system. It is used to create hair, fur, feathers, grass, and any type of geometry that needs to be placed in large quantities across a surface.

In this guide, I will take you from zero knowledge to understanding exactly how XGen works — and how you can start using it in your own 3D projects.


What is XGen?

XGen is a procedural geometry instancing framework built inside Autodesk Maya. It was originally developed at Walt Disney Animation Studios and later acquired by Autodesk.

At its core, XGen places geometry (called primitives) across the surface of a 3D mesh — following guides, maps, and modifiers that you set up to control the final look.

XGen is used to create:

  • Realistic animal fur (lions, dogs, horses, bears)
  • Human hair — straight, curly, braided, or stylized
  • Eyebrows, eyelashes, and stubble
  • Feathers on birds
  • Grass and ground cover for environments
  • Crowd instancing — placing thousands of objects across a landscape

Understanding XGen — Key Concepts

Before you open Maya, understand these fundamental concepts:

1. Description

A Description is a collection of primitives (hairs or instances) that share the same settings. Think of it as a "layer" of fur. A realistic animal might have 3-5 descriptions — an undercoat, mid-coat, guard hairs, and wispy tips.

2. Collection

A Collection is a container that holds one or more Descriptions. You can think of it as a folder that organizes your grooming work.

3. Guides

Guides are the control curves that define the direction and shape of your fur or hair. XGen generates the final primitives by interpolating between these guides.

4. Primitives

Primitives are the actual hairs or geometry that XGen generates. They follow the guides and can be shaped using modifiers.

5. Modifiers

Modifiers are the tools that shape, clump, noise, and style your primitives. They are the key to achieving photorealistic results.


The 5 Essential XGen Modifiers

Mastering these 5 modifiers will take your XGen work from "flat and plastic" to "cinematic and photorealistic":

1. Clump Modifier

Clumping groups individual hairs together into natural clumps — the way real fur and hair behaves. Without clumping, fur looks like a carpet. With proper clumping, it looks alive.

Key settings:

  • Clump Width — how tight the clumps are
  • Clump Twist — adds natural variation
  • Three layers of clumping — large, medium, and micro — create depth

2. Noise Modifier

The Noise modifier adds random variation to the length, direction, and position of hairs. Without noise, fur looks too uniform and "digital." Noise breaks up the uniformity and adds realism.

Key settings:

  • Magnitude — the amount of noise
  • Frequency — the scale of the noise pattern
  • Correlation — how consistent the noise is

3. Cut Modifier

The Cut modifier controls the length of individual hairs based on texture maps. You can paint density maps directly onto your mesh to control where fur grows long, short, or not at all.

4. Coil Modifier

The Coil modifier adds curl and wave to hairs. Essential for curly hair, wool, and certain types of animal fur.

5. Sculpt Modifier

The Sculpt modifier lets you push and pull fur in specific directions — like a grooming brush. Use it to create parting lines, flow patterns, and directional fur.


Step-by-Step — Setting Up XGen for Animal Fur

Here is the basic workflow for setting up fur on an animal character:

Step 1 — Prepare Your Base Mesh

  • Your mesh must be clean with good UV unwrapping
  • Avoid overlapping UVs — XGen uses UVs for texture maps
  • Scale your mesh to real-world size in Maya before starting

Step 2 — Create an XGen Collection and Description

  • In Maya: Windows → Rendering Editors → XGen
  • Create a new Collection and Description
  • Set primitive type to "Splines" for fur/hair

Step 3 — Set Base Length and Density

  • Start with a uniform length across the entire mesh
  • Set density conservatively — you can increase it later
  • Preview in viewport using low-density mode

Step 4 — Add and Paint Density Maps

  • Use XGen's built-in map painting tool
  • Paint density to zero in areas with no fur (eyes, nose, paw pads)
  • Paint longer fur on belly and tail, shorter on face and ears

Step 5 — Place Guide Curves

  • Place guides at key locations — head, back, belly, tail
  • Style guides to define the overall flow direction of the fur
  • XGen interpolates all primitives based on your guides

Step 6 — Add Modifiers — Start with Clump

  • Add Clump modifier first — set up three levels of clumping
  • Large clumps first, then medium, then micro-detail
  • This is the most important step for realism

Step 7 — Add Noise Modifier

  • Add gentle noise to break up uniformity
  • Keep magnitude low — too much noise looks messy
  • Different noise settings for different descriptions (undercoat vs guard hairs)

Step 8 — Set Up Arnold Shader

  • Use aiStandardHair shader for realistic hair shading
  • Set Melanin values to match your reference — blonde, brown, black
  • Adjust roughness for glossy or matte fur

Step 9 — Test Render

  • Render a test frame in Arnold
  • Look for bald spots, clumping issues, and shading problems
  • Iterate — XGen grooming requires patience and multiple rounds of refinement

  • Coil modifier for curly or wavy hair
  • Flyaway hairs — a separate description with short, random hairs at the scalp

Hardware Tips for XGen

XGen can be demanding on your system. Here are some tips:

  • Work in low preview density — increase only for final renders
  • Use render proxies — render XGen to image planes for lighting tests
  • Keep scene files organized — XGen files are stored separately from the Maya file
  • Render on a render farm if possible — XGen renders can be slow on a single machine
